At night in the forests of Aldergrove, the mercenary Felix and his band slip past farmsteads, take a few crops for breakfast and cut through a graveyard, where every night sound suddenly stops. They flee in panic and only later notice that several men are missing. One of them staggers out of the woods, badly wounded, shouts at them to run and dies. The survivors head for the nearest town, and the scene fades to black.

Readers compared the plan with the popular cinematic series of the time. The authors meant to release the saga act by act.
